Zucchini’s
They've actually been around for 15 years, but it’s totally excusable if you haven’t heard of them yet. They’re a bit hard to find. You've probably driven past there a hundred times and will be wholly surprised to have missed the oh-so-obvious. Marked by a brightly red-orange sign, which – admittingly – should indicate it’s location rather straight forward, I nevertheless must have walked right past there at least a dozen times while looking for it. Once you’ve found it however, Zucchini's 'hole-in-a-wall'-sized Vegetarian Eatery is where you want to have your lunch take-out. A confessing Vegetarian, Cape Town is not a particularly easy place to graze in; and so it is Zucchini's, that often seals the deal for my raging tummy. It's a compact 15-seater though, so please don't expect a 5 Star dining experience (as you may gather by simply looking at the venue). But if you’re after a wholesome, freshly home-made and ridiculously affordable meal, you should definitely give this little gem a try. Founded in 1995, Lee, her 2 sons and 4 staff expanded through the all-famous Lola’s on Long Street about 8 years ago, before selling it last year to leave Lee focusing on what she does best – making those delicious breakfasts, curries, sandwiches (the Egg-Mayo, Avo and Mushroom one being a personal favorite), salads, snacks, soups, pastas and other yummies, for example Baked Potato with Roasted Veg, Mushroom and Cheese or Stacked Spinach Pancakes...Oh wow, I actually just got hungry all over again. Eish, let me go sort this out you-know-where.
To wrap it all up then, if you live in Cape Town, love healthy food and have not been to Zucchini’s, you missed out. As simple as that. If you’re the first time in Cape Town, a returning visitor or planning on checking out the Mother City, Zucchinis is a definite must on your list. Why?
'Cause it's the best Vegetarian Food in town. Period.
